Supporting Guatemala after the recent volcano

Supporting Guatemala after the recent volcano

Our thoughts are with the people of Guatemala, where earlier this week, an eruption of Volcán de Fuego in Antigua left hundreds dead or missing and caused damage to neighboring villages. Holbrook Travel has close ties to Guatemala and is providing continuous support.

Holbrook has been in consistent contact with our in-country operators. Although the eruption was particularly tragic for the remote villages outside of Antigua, the rest of the country remains minimally, if at all affected. “All passengers, associates, and tourists are safe and were not affected in any way /were in any risk” reported Holbrook’s local Guatemala operator. “All travel programs are continuing to operate successfully without any disruption to destinations or roadways. The ash that reached Antigua has been completely cleaned up and the city has been back to business as usual since Monday evening.”

In addition to the mortal impact, the citizens of Guatemala are suffering economic devastation as well. Now more than ever, Guatemala needs your support. If you would like to donate to the relief effort, click below for information on the Wings Organization, who will provide aid directly to the needed areas. Holbrook Travel will match all donations, up to 500 (USD) dollars.

Perhaps an even more helpful way to support the country is to plan to travel there. While the volcano tragically impacted several nearby communities, the rest of the country and areas we visit have had no impact. The local communities depend extensively on tourism. Holbrook is supporting also by continuing our birding programs as before and hoping more travelers will come see the extraordinary birding available, friendly people, and beautiful landscapes.
