Highlights of Birding in Panama
 

Thousands of species of flora and fauna flourish in Panama's lush rainforests including 954 bird species. It is the natural land bridge the country forms that links North and Central America with South America that makes this such a biologically rich area. These forests are a bird watcher's dream.


 
 Itinerary
 

Day 1     Panama City

  • Enjoy a relaxing evening in Panama City 

Day 2-4     Soberanía National Park

  • Accompanied by an experienced birding guide, explore the expansive Soberanía National Park, looking for birds in the under-story

  • Near Summit Ponds, watch for waterfowl such as the Rufescent Tiger-Heron and Wattled Jacana

  • Bird watch along famous Pipeline Road, expecting to see families of parrots, hummingbirds, trogons, and motmots

  • Other birds to look for: Lance-tailed Manakin, Spot-crowned Barbet, White-headed Wren, Streaked Antwren, Great-tailed Grackle, a variety of antbirds, toucans, honeycreepers, puffbirds, woodcreepers, tanagers, and euphonias

  • Visit a research center and enjoy close encounters with a variety of wildlife including monkeys, agoutis, sloths, and more

  • Explore Gatun Lake by boat, watching for common birds like Crested Guans and Great Tinamous

Day 5-6     Sierra Llorona

  • From a series of observation platforms, watch the forest canopy for a glimpse of Bare-necked Umbrellabirds, Lattice-tailed Trogons, and other Caribbean Slope species

  • Explore the rainforest trails for Grey-headed Chachalacas, Shining Honeycreepers, Indigo Buntings, and more

Day 7-8     Chiriqui Highlands

  • Bird watch in Friendship International Park, looking for quetzals and Emerald Toucanets

  • Search for Pale-billed Woodpeckers, Northern Jacanas, antbirds, flycatchers, and tanagers

Day 9-10     Boquete

  • Search for mid and high elevation birds such as Red-headed Barbets, Emerald Tanagers, and Finca Lerida in Boquete

  • Peruse the banks of a nearby river for a variety of waterfowl

  • On the slopes of Vocan Barú, scan the forest edge for Great Currasows, Black-faced Solitaires, Collared Redstarts, and Yellow-thighed Finches

Day 11     Panama City

  • Relax in Panama City
