Day 03: February 20, 2014

This morning we had breakfast first and then went to the Crooked Tree Pine forest. It had been such a great afternoon of birding yesterday that Alex wanted to return.

We saw a lot of birds, but it wasn’t quite as good as the day before, so we returned to the lodge to check-out and we left for the 2.5 hour drive to San Ignacio.

Along the way, we stopped by the Belize Zoo and met our local guide, Rene. Most of the group stayed with Rene as he talked about the many animals there due to injury or being kept as a personal pet.  If Alex spotted a bird, many would follow his enthusiastic call, spot the find and then catch up with Rene again!

After the zoo, we had lunch at a local restaurant and we were within a short distance for an early afternoon arrival in San Ignacio and the Cahal Pech Resort.  This hotel is located right next to the ruins that share its name.

We walked back to the hotel for check-in and settled into our rooms.  Afterwards, some people went birding in the gardens below the swimming pool with Alex. for the rooms to be ready, we walked over to the Mayan Ruins of Cahal Pech with Rene. He was able to give his tour of the ruins and Alex found us birds.  It was a nice combination outing.

Birds of the Day: Semipalmated Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Pale Vented Pigeon, Olive Throated Parakeet, White-fronted Amazon, Red-lored Amazon, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, White-collared Swift, Green-breasted Mango, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Lineated Woodpecker, Vermilion Flycatcher to name a few.
