Day Two
Today was the day we would see one of India’s greatest treasures, the Taj Mahal. We got up and started at 4:30 a.m. so we could get on the first train to Agra. We had a lovely boxed breakfast as we rocketed along in the high-speed train, getting to Agra in time to check into our hotel and be at the Taj Mahal by 9:30 a.m.
The light was softened by hazy skies, giving the Taj a pearly look. Going through the great entry gate and seeing this wonder of the world takes my breath away every time I see it. The perfect symmetry of the structure and the use of white marble inlayed with semiprecious stone make it arguably the most beautiful work ever built.
After lunch we were enthralled by the Agra Fort, another world Heritage Site that offered arched audience chambers, sculpted stonework and a magnificent view across the river to the Taj. My favorite photos were of colorfully dressed local people taking in the sights.
From there we did a quick visit to the “Baby Taj” a smaller tomb on which the Taj’s design was based. We crossed the river in time to see the Taj Mahal from a different angle in low evening light.
