1. If you've ever wondered where the longest fence in the world is located, then look no further than Australia. Dingo Fence (Dog Fence) stretches about 5,600 km (three times as long as the Great Wall of China) from Jimbour on the Darling Downs near Dalby to the cliffs of Nullarbor Plain. It was built during the 1880s in an effort to keep dingoes out of the fertile land on the southeast part of the continent.

2. The largest living structure on Earth is the Great Barrier Reef. It is greater in size than the United Kingdom, Holland and Switzerland combined. Located off the coast of Queensland in the Coral Sea, the reef is visible from space. The reef is a gathering of the world's largest collection of corals, providing divers with the most spectacular underwater experience imaginable.

3. The Wet Tropics of Queensland are home to many threatened species which are also often rare or endemic. Some of these iconic, threatened species are the southern cassowary and the mahogany glider.

4. The Australian Box Jellyfish is claimed to be the most venomous marine animal to mankind. The venom contains toxins that attack the heart, nervous system and skin cells. There have been only 63 reported deaths from a Box Jellyfish sting over the last 100 years, so it is a rare occurrence.

5. The Sydney Opera House weighs about 161,000 tons.

6. The Cairns region is home to Australia's largest moth- the Hercules moth. It is found in Tropical North Queensland and its wingspan is 25cm.

7. Queensland is also home to the Australian Lungfish. Although it has five pairs of gills, this fish is capable of breathing air via a "lung." It is said to be the sole Australian survivor of a family of fish that has been around since the dinosaurs.

8. Australia has over 10,000 beaches. If you visited one per day, it would take you over 27 years to go to them all.

9. The longest mail run in the world takes place in Australia. In one day a postman flies over 900 miles from Cairns to Cape York with 10 stops.

10. Australia is the only continent on Earth that is occupied by one nation.
