About this trip

Join Hawks Aloft on an unforgettable and comprehensive 11-day exploration of Costa Rica for the chance to encounter some of the hundreds of avian species that call this exceptionally biodiverse nation home. Spend time in hotspots in the Caribbean lowlands, the tropical dry forests and mangroves of the Central Pacific coast, and the mountainous southern highlands, seeking out species typical of the differing elevations and habitats. Embark on hikes, boat rides, and a suspended canopy walkway tour accompanied by our expert local birding guides who will help ensure you spot as many of the country’s 900-plus species as possible. Plus, marvel at a stunning breadth of landscapes and fascinating wildlife like frogs, monkeys, bats, sloths, and more.

Highlights

  • Ascend the 328-foot suspended walkway at Tirimbina Biological Reserve for the chance to see species that spend their time high within the forest canopy layer.
  • Bird the trails of the world-renowned La Selva Biological Station, where more than half of Costa Rica’s species have been recorded, including the Great Tinamou, Pied Puffbird, and Spectacled Owl.
  • Spend a full day in Carara National Park, an ecologically diverse hotspot due to its location at the convergence of northwestern tropical dry forest and humid southern Pacific rainforest.
  • Search for the Resplendent Quetzal, Slaty Flowerpiercer, Ruddy Treerunner, and other high-elevation species in the cloud forests of the Talamanca Mountains.

About Hawks Aloft

Hawks Aloft, Inc, a 501-C-3 nonprofit organization based in Albuquerque, New Mexico was founded in 1994 by 12 like-minded individuals with expertise in a wide variety of professional fields. Our vision focuses on protecting indigenous wild birds and their habitats. Our goal was then, and continues to be to act with transparency and collaborate with others to build a network that conducts research on all species of birds and fosters future leaders by providing school-year long education programs free of charge to low income schools. In 2013, we incorporated raptor rescue into our mission in response to overwhelming requests for help with injured birds. Today, we run the New Mexico Raptor Rescue Hotline, a free statewide resource for people who have found an injured bird or have other concerns.

We are proud to partner with Holbrook Travel to be able to offer our members and others the opportunity to travel, see native wildlife in other lands, experience differing cultures, and learn from local conservationists about efforts in their countries. https://hawksaloft.org

Sarapiqui

Feb 11, 2025

Begin the day with early morning birding. After breakfast, set out to explore the reserve again on a different trail. Selva Verde's reserve is home to one of the largest almond trees in all of Central America, which provides habitat for the endangered Great Green Macaw. This afternoon, explore Tirimbina Biological Reserve on a guided hike. The trails at Tirimbina are designed to afford excellent opportunities for viewing rainforest biodiversity. As a large proportion of life in the rainforest thrives in the canopy layer, visitors can experience the richness of treetop flora and fauna from a 328-foot suspended canopy walkway spanning one of the many stream valleys in the reserve. After dinner at Tirimbina, enjoy an informative talk on the lives of bats.

Carara

Feb 13, 2025

Travel to the Central Pacific Coast today. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant, and then go for a boat ride along the Tárcoles River to watch for both water and shore birds, like the Double-striped Thick-knee, Roseate Spoonbill, jacanas, and ducks. The Tárcoles River basin is one of the most important in the Pacific coastal region; it drains virtually the entire western side of the Central Valley. Tárcoles hosts an amazing diversity of wildlife along its banks. The river is a perfect place to catch a glimpse of mangrove specialties such as the rare Rufous-necked Wood-Rail, Mangrove Hummingbird, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Panama Flycatcher, Mangrove Vireo, Mangrove (Yellow) Warbler, and Scrub Greenlet. Perhaps the most famous of all its inhabitants are the enormous American crocodiles that live on its banks. Later, take a guided night walk to search for owls.

Carara

Feb 14, 2025

Take an early morning bird walk before breakfast. Then, set out for a full day at Carara National Park, one of the birding hotspots of Costa Rica. The park is located in the Central Pacific region, one of the most ecologically diverse areas of the country. The intersection of northwestern tropical dry forest with the humid rainforest of the South Pacific region, concentrated in a relatively small area, produces an interesting combination of species from both ecosystems. Keep your eyes open for Golden-naped Woodpecker, Baird's Trogon, Orange-collared Manakin, Riverside Wren, Black-hooded Antshrike, Dot-winged Antwren, Long-billed Gnatwren, and Chestnut-backed Antbird. Return to the lodge for dinner.
