Reviews and Photos from Storied Audubon Camp

Earlier this month, an eclectic group of nature enthusiasts returned from a 5-day Holbrook program held with Hog Island Audubon Camp. This venerable hub for conservation has been welcoming birders, educators, and nature enthusiasts for over 80 years.

The reviews are in and this one received a score of 10 all around. We’re sharing a sampling of photos and comments from participants. Planning for our next trip there in 2023 is underway!

Saturday, August 28 | Arrival, Welcome Dinner, and Evening Talk

“Another Holbrook trip above and beyond the call of duty. One improvement? Let me bring home the scenery!” — Teresa Gubanich

“I wanted to visit Hog Island for years and also to get a better idea of what Holbrook was all about. Both of those goals were met very well.” — Sally O'Byrne

“I thought the group was exceptionally friendly and cohesive. I liked that it wasn’t ALL about the birds. Eva and Eric did a great job covering the geography and history of the island. I have to add that the food was wonderful! Perfect COVID antidote.” — Peggy West

Sunday, August 29 | Early Morning Birding, Muscongus Bay Boat Trip, Geology Hike to Bingham Cottage

“My overall experience was very good, enhanced by the friendliness and knowledge of so many group members. Workshops were well prepared. Best part of the experience for me was the two boat trips.” — Jim Childs

“The leaders and staff at Hog Island and from Holbrook were professional, friendly, and very helpful. The volunteers were amazing and the property, excursions, and presentations were all enjoyable. This was my second trip and I thoroughly enjoyed It. I'm looking forward to continuing traveling with Holbrook.” — Bert Alm

Monday, August 30 | Visit the Mainland: Hidden Valley Nature Center, Medomak Pond, Great Salt Bay Farm

“The variety of activities that were offered in a relatively short time frame were very much appreciated. I was a novice birder going into this experience but have a deeper appreciation for birding now. I also appreciated the diversity of food selections and the focus on local sourcing for foods at each meal. Travel with Holbrook is a well-organized, meaningful, fun-filled, diversified experience!” — Karen Burns

“Fabulous experience, wonderful people! This was my first experience with Holbrook AND Hog Island, and it was wonderful throughout. I am delighted.” — Kay Stickane

Tuesday, August 31 | Boat Trip to Egg Rock Island, Audubon Decoy Workshop, Final Bird List, Lobster Dinner

“Our overall experience was top-notch. The scenery was beautiful, and the lectures by all the speakers were fantastic. We especially liked the boat trips and the hike to the opposite end of the island. Eric and Eva were so knowledgeable and so friendly, it was a pleasure to get to know them. And a big salute to all the Hog Island volunteers who worked so hard to make our stay a great experience — they should all get a raise!!” — Teresa Gubanich

“I have worked with Holbrook for many years, and have nothing but praise and admiration. Ask them for something and it is done, whether it be revising a trip itinerary, scheduling airline flights, or answering questions, etc. And the trips are wonderful — excellent accommodations, fantastic food, and friendly, knowledgeable guides and drivers.” — Alan Gubanich

Wednesday, September 1 | Farewell, Return Home

“It was a great experience, I am glad we were able to visit several locations. I actively recommend Holbrook.” — Barbra Sobhani
